Agreement includes new locomotives, parts and maintenance services
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 23, 2026 - MRS Logística has taken another decisive step toward fulfilling its modernization and sustainability commitments by signing an agreement worth approximately US$254 million (R$1.3 billion) with Wabtec. The investment, which will be made in phases through 2032, includes the acquisition of new advanced-technology locomotives, spare parts and specialized maintenance services.
The agreement advances the company’s strategic plan for fleet renewal and the decarbonization of its operations, reaffirming its commitment to more efficient, safe and sustainable logistics in Brazil.
“MRS is committed to strengthening the country’s infrastructure by providing safe, modern and sustainable rail transportation services,” said Guilherme Mello, CEO of MRS Logística. “These agreements with Wabtec accelerate our fleet renewal plan, enabling us to increase asset availability, reduce the environmental impact of freight transportation and meet the growing demands of the Brazilian economy with maximum efficiency.”
The package includes Evolution Series locomotives, including the ES44ACi model. The locomotives feature advanced engines and digital technology designed to deliver high productivity with lower fuel consumption and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with prior-generation locomotives.
Advanced equipment accelerates decarbonization and increases Brazil’s rail freight capacity
For the freight transportation sector, which plays a strategic role in moving large volumes of Brazil’s agricultural, industrial and mining products to markets around the world, the addition of these locomotives represents a significant step toward lower-carbon transportation and a more competitive Brazilian logistics chain.
“This agreement reflects the strength of our longstanding partnership with MRS and our shared commitment to advancing sustainable mobility in Brazil,” said Danilo Miyasato, President and Regional Leader for Wabtec in Latin America. “Through these technology solutions, we are supporting MRS in achieving its productivity, energy efficiency and long-term sustainability goals.”
The addition of the new locomotives reaffirms MRS’s commitment to fulfilling the obligations undertaken as part of its concession renewal process. By expanding its operational capacity and modernizing its rail infrastructure, the company is strengthening the movement of goods across the country and supporting economic development in a safe, modern and efficient manner.
About MRS
MRS is a logistics operator that manages a 1,643-kilometer rail network across the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, a region that accounts for approximately half of Brazil’s GDP. The company ranks among the world’s leading freight railroads, with output more than four times higher than the levels recorded in the 1990s.
The rail network connects mineral and agricultural commodity-producing regions with some of the country’s major industrial hubs and the largest ports in southeastern Brazil. It supports a diversified transportation operation that includes containers, steel products, cement, bauxite, agricultural products, coke, coal and iron ore. Approximately 20% of everything Brazil exports and about one-third of all freight transported by rail in the country moves along MRS tracks.
