Sustainability Strategy
Unlock our customers’ potential by delivering innovative and lasting transportation solutions.
Wabtec is committed to creating sustainable value through innovative rail technologies and responsible business practices, benefiting all Wabtec stakeholders.
When it comes to corporate sustainability, Wabtec has a three-pronged approach that includes:
We are committed to developing responsible and sustainable products that minimize the impact on the planet.
We are committed to providing work environments and products that enable the productive and efficient use of resources.
We are committed to driving a culture built on integrity, empowering our people, and investing in the communities where our teams live and work.
In 2024, in partnership with an external advisor, we reevaluated Wabtec’s priorities related to sustainability matters, as first determined in 2021.
The identified sustainability priorities are at the core of our sustainability strategy, reflecting the areas of highest importance to Wabtec and its stakeholders. They guide our action plans. We continue to review and refine the actions we are taking across our business and value chain, ensuring they remain impactful, credible, and aligned with long-term value creation.
The impacts of climate change affect many aspects of our global society and economy. The Wabtec Climate Report presents our strategy for addressing climate-related impacts relevant to our business. This disclosure is aligned with recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). This climate report aims to provide our shareholders and other stakeholders with a high-level overview of the climate-related physical and transition risks to which Wabtec may be exposed, in addition to a review of potential climate-related opportunities. The report also includes product capability goals, which demonstrate how we plan to continue to create sustainable value for our stakeholders and shareholders.
Demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability, our operational framework is aligned with the science-based goal of limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5°C. We aim to achieve this by driving responsible operations. For more information, see Driving Responsible Operations.
We measure our indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from value chain activities (Scope 3) to better understand their impact and inform our climate strategy. Emissions from Scope 3 Category 11: Use of Sold Products account for over 97% of the estimated total Scope 3 emissions, representing one of the greatest opportunities for Wabtec to drive meaningful impact. Within this category, the largest source of emissions is from our customers’ use of our freight locomotives.
Our Scope 3 strategy focuses on what we can control and where we can have the greatest impact. We develop and manufacture innovative products and services that enable further emissions reductions and help our customers meet their sustainability goals. As global freight volumes increase and more goods are transported by rail, the demand for locomotives is expected to increase. This could increase the absolute Scope 3 emissions from Wabtec’s products. However, the overall emissions reduction benefits from shifting to rail – a more energy efficient and safer mode of transportation – would exceed the change in Scope 3 absolute emissions from Wabtec’s products. Moreover, adoption by our customers of Wabtec’s next-generation technologies will drive further reductions in our customers’ Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which also would reduce the Scope 3 emissions intensity of Wabtec’s products.
Delivering a more sustainable product portfolio is one of the fundamental pillars of our overall sustainability strategy. This approach is closely aligned with our product capability goals and long-term climate strategy. Check out the Company’s latest Sustainability Highlights report for to view our progress.

In 2022, Wabtec joined the United Nations Global Compact, demonstrating our existing and ongoing commitment to the universal sustainability principles promoted by the organization.
Acting on our Sustainability strategy requires engagement with stakeholders and thought leaders outside of our organizational envelope. As a leading player in both the passenger and freight rail sectors and a storied company with more than 155 years of experience driving innovation, we believe that Wabtec has an obligation to engage in dialogue and drive collaboration.
Wabtec frequently engages and collaborates with industry leaders and suppliers.
