Wabtec Receives TUV SUD Certification for the New Metroflexx Brake System

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 10, 2020Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) announced today its new Metroflexx brake system was certified by TÜV SÜD, an independent, testing and certification authority. Metroflexx is Wabtec’s next-generation braking systems for the mass transit rail industry.  The TUV certification validates the system meets the safety, quality and performance standards set at an organizational, local or international level.

“This certification by TUV SUD marks an important step for the Metroflexx brake as we continue to provide the transit industry with cutting-edge technologies to address operational challenges,” said Lilian Leroux, President of Wabtec’s Transit business. “It highlights our commitment to deliver the safe, sustainable and reliable solutions our customers need to be successful.”

The certification builds on the momentum Metroflexx is establishing in the marketplace. Earlier this year, Alstom awarded Wabtec a contract to supply the braking system for the first 219 metro cars for the future Grand Paris Express. Wabtec will install Metroflexx on six-car and three-car trains that will run on the transit authority’s new 15, 16 and 17 lines. The deal also included pantographs and event recorders.

“We are proud to be working with Alstom on the next generation of trains for the Grand Paris Express,” said Leroux. “This order marks the first, large-scale commercial application of Metroflexx, our new brake control system that offers the highest degree of safety and performance. The system will provide top-of-the-line stopping distance and reduce dwell time, enabling the Grand Paris Express to maximize train capacity and operations.”

Designed to meet customer and regulatory demands, Metroflexx significantly reduces the weight, energy consumption, lifecycle cost of a train. Metroflexx communicates with the train computer and traction equipment to optimize use of electrodynamic braking and was designed with sustainability in mind – 95 percent of the system’s parts can be recycled at end of life.

Metroflexx also has patented architecture ensuring that a single failure will not prevent the train to continue safe operation. In case of a failure, the system can be replaced in less than 20 minutes by just one operator. Additionally, Metroflexx’s embedded condition-based maintenance capability provides fault report, residual time prior to overhaul and inspection flags to maximize availability and minimize maintenance cost.

“Wabtec is right now attracting the interest of a large number of car-builders and transit authorities with its Metroflexx offering” said Leroux.
